Grammar points

-지만but, although

-지만 sets the pursuit against its failure: the agencies gave chase, but he got away. In crime reporting this ending often carries the turn of the story, so the clause after it is the one to read for what actually happened.

Example: 경찰과 법무부가 추적에 나섰지만, A씨는 이를 따돌리고 청주 일대를 배회했습니다.

The police and the Ministry of Justice gave chase, but A shook them off and wandered around 청주.

-(으)ㄴ 지 N 만에N (time) after doing ...

-(으)ㄴ 지 N 만에 measures the time from an action to the next event, and 만에 carries a sense of how short or long that was. 달아난 지 3시간 만에 붙잡혔다: he was caught three hours after fleeing. Without 만에 the sentence would only state the interval, not frame it.

Example: 그는 달아난 지 3시간 만에 청주의 한 편의점에서 붙잡혔습니다.

He was caught at a convenience store in 청주 three hours after he fled.

-다가while doing ..., in the middle of ... (and then)

-다가 marks an action interrupted or followed by another: 배회하다가 붙잡혔다, he was wandering about and then got caught. The first action was still going on when the second happened, which is exactly the shape of an arrest story.

Example: A씨는 청주 일대를 배회하다가 편의점에서 붙잡혔습니다.

A was wandering around 청주 when he was caught at a convenience store.
